- 11 players are allowed on the field at one time, including 1 goalie
- A game starts with a kick-off from the center of the field
- Equipment required includes shoes, socks, shin guards, shorts and a shirt or jersey. A goalie may require gloves.
- A referee makes decisions as to judgment calls over the course of the game and enforces the rules with corresponding penalties.
- A ball is out of play when it fully crosses the field’s sideline or goal line boundary outside the posts and above the cross bar.
- A goal is scored when the ball fully crosses the goal line between the posts and under the cross bar.
- Offside occurs when a player passes the ball to another player, with the receiving player closer to the opposing side’s goal than any defender, excluding the goalie, at the onset of the pass.
- Fouls may be called by a referee for impermissible contact with the ball or another player. Players cannot push, shove, hit or intentionally run into any opposing player within reason. All slide tackles must into contact with the ball first opposed to the opposing player’s legs. The ball cannot come into contact by any part of the arm outside of the shoulders. The goalie is the load exception to this rule and may touch the ball with any part of the body.
- A free kick is given in the instance a foul occurs and the innocent team loses possession of the ball. In most instances free kicks take place a the spot of the foul.
- Penalty kicks may be rewarded for any foul within the box. A penalty kick is a direct shot on goal with no defense in front to help the goalie. The ball is placed in a set position, and the striker may not dribble it.
